Who has lost their voice?

Everyone having a voice is a sign of psychological safety. Many of you will be familiar with this but if you feel like a refresher then this article reminds us What Is Psychological Safety? (hbr.org). This article says: How people answer the following questions will give you a sense of the degree to which they feel psychologically safe:

  1. If you make a mistake on this team, it is not held against you.
  2. Members of this team are able to bring up problems and tough issues.
  3. People on this team sometimes accept others for being different.
  4. It is safe to take a risk on this team.
  5. It isn’t difficult to ask other members of this team for help.
  6. No one on this team would deliberately act in a way that undermines my efforts.
  7. Working with members of this team, my unique skills and talents are valued and utilised.

So, take time out to think:

  • How would you and your team answer the above questions?
  • How do you know?
  • In what way have you actively created a psychological safe environment this week?
  • What could you, will you, consciously do differently next week?

As leaders, we can all show our people that we are role modelling the changes that all of us want to see. Let’s be better and be the change. Contact [email protected] if you would like help to do so.
