Adam Grant said “Good leaders build products. Great leaders build cultures”.
Most leaders know that the culture in their team will impact the customers that want to do business with you, the talent that you can attract, as well as the productivity, engagement and retention of existing team members. And yet, how often are you mindful about the prevailing culture surrounding you?
MIT explored the factors impacting on workplace culture here: 10 Things Your Corporate Culture Needs to Get Right. As well as job security, the following were listed as some of the key factors to consider
- Employees feeling respected
- Presence of supportive leaders who are empowering, organised, emotionally stable and friendly was a key predictor of a positive culture
- Leaders living by their values
With that in mind, take time to think:
- Are your communications written in an adult to adult manner?
- What more can you do to be a source of support for your team?
- How did you role model your organisations values last week?
- Which value do you find the most challenging to role model and why? What are you going to do about that?
As leaders, we can show our people that we are role modelling the changes that all of us want to see. Let’s be better and be the change – contact [email protected] if you would like help to do so.
