This time I want to touch on motivation. I doubt very much there is an organisation out there not under pressure. With that pressure and the high levels of uncertainty; how can you as leaders motivate yourselves and others to give your best over the coming months?
I thought this article was really interesting and recommend it as a read – How Good Leaders Inspire and Motivate Others – Business Leadership Today. It talks about the fact that to perform at their best in an ever-changing world, people need the best from their leaders.
Engagement means far more than having an engagement strategy; mechanistic approaches that lack sincerity will soon be found out. It describes how ‘the best leaders use themselves as instruments to inspire and motivate people and shape organizational culture and communities that employees want to be part of’. It also outlined that to inspire and motivate others; good leaders focus on doing six key things:
- They provide direction even in conditions of fast change and ambiguity
- They focus on employee engagement and well-being;
- They actively support employees;
- They emphasise Voice;
- They inspire trust; and
- They are active learners.
With that in mind, take time to think:
- How are you helping your people to see how their work aligns to your organisational strategy – are they clear on their role in that shared purpose/mission?
- Have you consciously reflected on your communication and engagement mechanisms in the hybrid world? Have you got the balance right?
- Have you recognised significant effort within your team this week? Anyone you have missed out that you could reach out to today?
- What have you learned recently? And how have you shared that learning?
As leaders, we can show our people that we are role modelling the changes that all of us want to see. Let’s be better and be the change – contact [email protected] if you would like help to do so.
