Is it me?

There seems to be a bit of a trend of self-flagellation at the moment.  In conversations with clients recently, many are beating themselves up over their performance.

Don’t get me wrong, it is absolutely right to reflect and seize opportunities to learn and grow; however, part of that reflection should also include consideration of the environment, within which you are operating.

Is the environment you are working in fertile ground for you to grow? Or is it holding you back? Or worse, is it like quicksand and sucking you under?

This isn’t a get out of jail free excuse to be used for poor, or sub-par, performance; however, those of you who have a ‘be perfect’ driver (me included!) – there can be a tendency to push and push and push to change the environment or to be better, when at times, the right step forward can be a step away.

With that in mind, take time to think:

  • Where could you have done better recently and what lessons have you gleaned from that?
  • In what way is your work environment enabling you to be your best?
  • What is within your gift to make things better?
  • What are you going to do now?

As leaders, we can show our people that we are role modelling the changes that all of us want to see. Let’s be better and be the change – contact [email protected] if you would like help to do so.
