The concept of ‘being’ not ‘doing’ has come up in several conversations recently. You may be so busy ‘doing’, that:
- you forget why you were doing it in the first place.
- you become fixated on the finish line and forget to enjoy the journey.
- you only feel good about yourself when accomplishing things – your focus narrows to please others, rather than self-acceptance.
- you feel in the passenger, not the driving, seat of your own life.
- you feel overwhelmed by the ‘to do list’.
- you avoid ‘feeling’ and risk becoming numb.
Human beings recognise that an achievement culture risks being unhealthy and therefore consciously place importance on ‘who’ they are, their values, purpose and beliefs. They feel the meaning of their achievements because they are driven by their values and priorities – they want to be successful, not do successful.
With that in mind, take time to think:
- What are you really trying to achieve and why – can you articulate that clearly to yourself and others?
- What if you just slowed, stopped, and noticed, and listened – what intelligence or experiences might you be missing out on?
- How do you feel? Really feel? Is that how you want to feel? What are you going to do about it?
As leaders, we can show our people that we are role modelling the changes that all of us want to see. Let’s be better and be the change – contact [email protected] if you would like help to do so.
