I came across this quote this week “I see you—not just the mask you wear to the world, but the soul beneath that aches to be understood.” – Unknown
It made me think about the importance, and benefit of, leaders truly seeing people. By this I mean seeing people in a way where a connection is formed and an individual feels acknowledged, valued and understood.
Feeling truly seen is a powerful motivator and yet the pace at which life moves can limit our ability to really see others, unless we are purposeful about it.
With that in mind, take time to think:
- When have you felt truly seen and when have you felt barely noticed? How did both occasions make you feel?
- When operating at pace, how does that impact your presence with people? Are you in the moment with them, or already three steps ahead in your mind?
- Who have you perhaps taken for granted recently that you could reach out to now?
- What opportunities do you have in the week ahead to make colleagues and stakeholders feel truly seen?
As leaders, we can show our people that we are role modelling the changes that all of us want to see. Let’s be better and be the change – contact [email protected] if you would like help to do so.
