Whats the secret?

My inspiration this time has been various conversations about being tired (code for knackered!) in run up to the festive season. Me included!

This can really drain our resilience, so we need to think about what fuels our resilience; I therefore thought I would share the following article: The Secret to Building Resilience (hbr.org). The secret is that “resilience is not purely an individual characteristic but is also heavily enabled by strong relationships and networks”. It describes that “people in our support systems can provide empathy or simply help us laugh and bolster our resilience by shifting perspective and reminding us we are not alone in the fight. In short, resilience is not something we need to find deep down inside ourselves: we can actually become more resilient in the process of connecting with others in our most challenging times”.

This diagram in the article describes relational sources of resilience:

With that in mind, take time to think:

  • Which three of the above sources feel most important to you personally?
  • Where, and from who, are you getting these sources from?
  • Which networks/ relationships do you need to cultivate a bit more?
  • Which do you provide for other people?

As leaders, we can all show our people that we are role modelling the changes that all of us want to see. Let’s be better and be the change. Contact [email protected] if you would like help to do so.
